Orchard Park obstacle race to host huge volunteer firefighter recruitment event and honor victims of the West Webster Fire Department Christmas Eve tragedy
Columbia, Md. – Hero Rush, the tough, crazy firefighter-themed obstacle race, is bringing fire, energy and fun to kids and adults of all ages at the scenic Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, NY on Saturday, June 8, 2013.
Designed by veteran firefighters, Hero Rush is a unique obstacle race, challenging participants to face their fears and test their endurance and strength. Participants tackle a 4+ mile course with 17 – 20 intense firefighter-themed obstacles, with names such as the Towering Inferno, Bystander Blast, Staying Alive, Basement Entrapped, Stretcher Evac and HazMat Zone.
“Hero Rush is a new take on popular adventure races and mud runs,” said Dave J. Iannone, Co-Founder of Hero Rush. “Our participants climb ladders, navigate smoky mazes, rescue victims and break down doors. Everyone dreams of growing up to become a firefighter, and Hero Rush gives participants the opportunity to live like their heroes for the day.”
The Western New York race is hosted by the Erie County Parks Department, Erie County Department of Emergency Services and iVolunteerFIRE.org – the official recruitment campaign of the Erie County Volunteer Fire Service. It promises to be the area’s largest volunteer firefighter recruitment event ever, challenging participants with the call to action: “Be a Hero for a Day: HeroRush.com – Be a Hero for Life: iVolunteerFIRE.org.”
This all-day family-friendly event offers two unique kids’ courses, including a Mini Heroes Adventure Course open all day for kids age 4-6, and a half-mile Junior Heroes course for those 7-13. Additionally, the Inferno Midway includes activities for kids and adults of all ages, antique and modern fire apparatus, and demonstrations by various Erie County Volunteer Fire Departments, music, food and drinks, and more.
Erie County Volunteer Firefighter Recruiters will be on hand to answer questions about getting involved and showing off their new MRU-Mobile Recruitment Unit, Flame-SimTM Firefighting Simulation System and 20 ft. tall inflatable fire engine bounce-house.
Hero Rush is a proud supporter of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and National Firefighters Endowment (NFE). NFFF administers programs to honor fallen firefighters, assist their families and co-workers, and reduce line-of-duty injuries and deaths. NFE ensures firefighters have the proper equipment to respond to calls and make it home safely to their families. During registration, participants may choose the “343” wave at 11:00 a.m. to honor the fallen firefighters of 9/11. Hero Rush will match a $10 registration add-on to benefit NFFF.
The Western New York race will also honor those firefighters injured and killed in the Christmas Eve 2012 tragedy. The West Webster Wave at 12:30 p.m. will support the West Webster Fire Department’s fund for the injured firefighters and families of those killed. Hero Rush will match a $5 registration add-on to benefit the fund.
“Our team is thrilled to bring Hero Rush to the western New York area,” said Iannone. “We have worked very hard to create an event and atmosphere where families and friends can challenge themselves physically, enjoy the day together and gain a better understanding and appreciation of what firefighters in the community achieve every day. We look forward to June 8 and hope to see you at the starting line!”
Registration fees for Hero Rush vary based on date of registration. Public Safety, Students and Military receive $5 off the current registration price. Registration for kids ages 7-13 participating in the Juniors Heroes race is $15, and free for kids ages 4-6 to explore the Mini Heroes course, as well as race spectators.
